Save the Children staff accompanies Ayana*, 10, at the docks in Lampedusa as she prepares to board a ferry going to Sicily where she will travel along with 90 other migrant children to begin a long-term process of integration into Italian life.
Since the beginning of 2015, migrants have been arriving by boat from Libya in their thousands, including women, accompanied and unaccompanied children. Many of these migrants are fleeing persecution and violence in hope they will find a better life in Europe.
